The Serenity Prayer is attributed to Reinhold Neibuhr 1892-1971. It first appeared in differing versions in the 1930s. In the early 1940s it became known by the first Alcoholics Anonymous group which embraced it. It was initially known within the group as “The AA prayer,” but by the late 1940s, was known as “The Serenity Prayer.”
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
Today many twelve-step programs including, Al-Anon have adopted the prayer as presented or in slightly different versions of it.
