When I finally went to my first Al-Anon meeting way back in 2014, I didn’t know what to expect. I thought I could just go to one meeting and magically feel better and be done with Al-Anon. I would be “one and done” and then just ride off into the sunset to live my new and improved life, unaffected by other people’s drinking. One meeting was all it would take.
WRONG!
So, I went to a second meeting, then a third meeting and today, I continue to go to meetings as often as I can. (It is suggested one attend at least 6 meetings before deciding whether it is helpful for you.) At meetings, I know I will be privileged to hear people who are unafraid to share their experience, strength and hope and I can “take what I like and leave the rest.”
I believe sharing at a meeting can be incredibly helpful. So, over time I have learned to gather MY courage and share my story with other people, in the hope that my story may help them as their stories have helped me. Al-Anon is all about having a community, being in a safe space, trusting others with very personal struggles you have experienced, and feeling loved and accepted.
I am so glad I found Al-Anon. It is comforting to know there are Al-Anon meetings everywhere, every day, and that I have people I can contact, including a wonderful sponsor, if I need help in-between meetings.
Al-Anon has helped me immensely and has become a life-long program for me. I am proud to be a grateful member.
