I came to Al-Anon because my son-in-law’s drinking had become problematic. I was becoming upset and frustrated. I wanted him to stop drinking as I could see the negative effects on my grandsons and the distress it was causing my daughter.
Upon entering the rooms of Al-Anon, I learned that I was powerless over alcohol and my life had become unmanageable. I began reading the literature, attending meetings, and gradually felt some relief. After a while I got a sponsor and started working the steps. I discovered that I had a part in any given situation. I developed an awareness which allowed me to think before speaking. I learned to stay out of other people’s business. I discovered that I am a people pleaser, that I want everyone to always get along. I have learned to trust my Higher Power and let situations work out on their own without my interference. I became aware of how hurtful I was to my daughter by giving unwanted advice and at times criticizing her parenting. I also became aware of how I didn’t treat my grandson very kindly during remote learning. I was impatient and did not always listen and try to understand his needs. I now have tools to deal with different situations and usually react in a calm manner. I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to make amends to those that I have wronged. I also developed compassion towards my son-in-law in his disease.
Today I have healthier relationships because I pay attention to others, try not to give unwanted advice, and ask my Higher Power for guidance and strength. I am grateful to my sponsor who has been so supportive and understanding and to those who I have met in Al-Anon. I learn so much from their experience, strength, and hope.
